History
The Ford 8.8 design was first manufactured by Ford Motor Company in 1983. The axle was developed to replace the Ford 9-inch axle. The 8.8 IRS first saw use in the 1989 model year Ford Thunderbird and later Ford adapted the independent suspension differential into to its 3rd generation Explorer and 2nd generation Expedition SUVs. The Mustang first used the 8.8 IRS on 1999-2004 Cobra models.
Why do we use the Ford 8.8?
The Ford 8.8 differential is famous for being ahead of its time, its light weight (less than the iron BMW M differentials), it's strength and its aftermarket parts selection. Its the most popular differentials to swap into a variety of cars for good reason! A huge variety of gears, limited slip carriers and rebuild kits are available from all the popular sources like Summit Racing, JEGS and your local auto parts store. This 06-10 Explorer style differential uses an aluminum housing with two forward mounting points and a rear cover with built in mounting points which makes it perfect for swaps.
Bushing Height Choice:
Standard aluminum bushings emulate the OEM Ford bushing height. The Slim version is thinner to use in conunction with our Supra, E30, E8X/E9X, and F Series 8.8 Kits. E46 8.8 kits use the stadnard height bushing.
LSD Options:
Our favorite LSD is the Carbon Clutch type! The Ford Performance TracLok LSD handles well in really any applicaiton, and can be tuned for different amounts of locking action. It is quiet, locks super well, doesn't chatter and feels great on the road & track. We have proven its capabilities on tracks all across the country in our Ford 8.8 swapped Time-Attack E46 which always is in contention for wins. We supply this differential in all of our kits, but if you would like something different please reach out to us via email.
